Choctaw and Chickasaw Indians once occupied the rich land that was to become Greenwood's foundation. The first European immigrants settled in 1830, and in 1844, the town was incorporated. Greenwood's success is largely a result of its strategic position near the Yazoo and Tallahatchie Rivers. In times when cotton was king, Greenwood flourished. During the Civil War, Greenwood played a critical role in fending off Union troops by constructing a fort in between the Yazoo and Tallahatchie Rivers, which successfully postponed the Union advance to Vicksburg.

Situated in the hub of the Delta, Greenwood is infused with all that visitors have come to expect from a southern gem... and more. Historic downtown, located on the banks of the Yazoo River, is complete with carefully restored buildings which escort guests back in time. Restaurants offering home-style southern cuisine sit proudly next to chic boutiques, fine dining restaurants and eclectic art galleries. Visitors are encouraged to park the car, and walk this lovely downtown.

Those hoping to gain greater insight into the region should make a stop at the Cottonlandia Museum. From art to Indian earthenware and weapons, to a mastodon skeleton and military artifacts, the museum houses a variety of items that help construct a vivid picture of years past. The Florewood River Plantation is a re-creation of an 1850s plantation. Its steam engine display, and various demonstrations are big hits with kids young and old.

While visiting Greenwood, a side trip to the small town of Grenada will prove worthwhile. Located just 30 miles northeast of Greenwood, off Interstate 55, Grenada is in easy reach. Historic Old Grenada offers walking tours and specialty shops. Downtown's First Street Gallery presents the Arts in Action Street Festival every October.

Cougar Haven, home to a variety of exotic cats, is a sure bet for those traveling with children. Visitors who seek adventure should explore Grenada Lake, the largest body of water in the state. This recreation haven features over 100 miles of shoreline, fantastic jet skiing, huge playgrounds, and miles of nature/hiking trails. Thunder on Water, held annually in June, is Grenada Lake's most popular festival. Hundreds of vendors, live entertainment, spectacular fireworks, an exciting carnival, rodeo, speed boat race, and car, truck and bike show are just a few of the attractions.

Greenwood is located approximately 100 miles north of Jackson, MS just off Highway 82.
