Description

Sitting in the center of Indianapolis and once the site of the governor's mansion, Monument Circle is home to the 284 foot Solders' and Sailors' Monument. It commemorates Hoosiers who fought in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the Mexican-American War and the U.S. Civil War.

The monument was completed in 1901, houses the Colonel Eli Lilly museum in its base, and visitors can climb to the observation deck for free or pay $1 for an elevator ride to the top. It is an icon for the city of Indianapolis and a congregation point for many public activities and festivals. At Christmas time the monument is decorated like a traditional Christmas tree, lending it the nickname "Circle of Lights."

The center monument and the circle at large are surrounded by local shops, including the South Bend Chocolate Factory, local radio station studios and the Hilbert Circle Theater, home of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.
