Best known perhaps for its assocation with the fast and furious Indianopolis 500, Indiana's capital city offers those who look beyond the track a number of museums, a sprawling riverside park, lively arts districts and a range of college sports.
The Indianapolis 500 Hall of Fame Museum is a National Historic Landmark and one of the most highly visible landmarks devoted to auto racing. Approximately 30,000 square feet house the near 75 historic vehicles on display year round. Various displays show how the Indianapolis 500 is timed and executed, and about 250,000 visitors come to the museum each year, almost a third of which visit in May when the race is taking place.
The Hall of Fame Museum is open 364 days a year (closed Christmas Day) from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., and features extended hours to reflect open gate times during May activities. Tours are available for both the museum and the 2.5 mile track.
